Why digital presence matters for surgeons
Melbourne is a competitive market for orthopaedic surgery, and surgical skill alone no longer settles where a patient books. That part is assumed. What increasingly decides it is what a patient finds when they search.
Most patient journeys, from "my knee hurts" to booking a specific surgeon, now happen largely online, often before the referral is even acted on. If you're not visible and credible at that moment, a comparable surgeon who is will get the booking.
This guide walks through what actually moves the needle on local search for an orthopaedic practice in Melbourne, and where the line sits between good marketing and an AHPRA breach.
Where local SEO fits
What is Local SEO for Orthopaedic Surgeons?
Local SEO focuses on searches where location is part of the decision. For an orthopaedic practice, that can include a specialty, procedure or problem combined with Melbourne or a relevant consulting location.
For surgeons, you only care about patients who can actually walk into your clinic. Google impressions from Sydney or Adelaide? Worthless.
The aim is to make accurate practice information discoverable to people for whom location and service fit are relevant.
Here's what Google actually does: when someone searches "hip surgeon" on their phone, Google uses their location to filter results. It shows surgeons nearby, not some random doctor in Adelaide. This is your advantage if you play it right.
How do I improve it?
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is how you optimise for Local SEO.
Your GBP is often the first (and sometimes only) thing a patient sees before they call. Treat it like your storefront. If you dress in a suit to see patients in a clinic, why then would you dress your digital storefront in thrift shop attire?
Professional photos that showcase yourself and your clinic, a healthy Google review presence, and clear addresses and links to websites make all the difference.
One important caveat on reviews, because it trips up a lot of practices. Under AHPRA's advertising rules you must not solicit or re-share testimonials about the clinical aspects of care: symptoms, diagnoses, treatments or outcomes. Reviews patients leave on Google of their own accord are fine to leave where they are; what you cannot do is turn them into advertising. Feedback about the non-clinical experience, such as communication, ease of booking, reception and billing clarity, is not a testimonial and is genuinely usable. We go through exactly where that line sits in our plain-English guide to AHPRA's advertising rules.

Local SEO essentials
What do we have to align in the digital world? NAP - Name, Address and Phone Number.
Think of NAP consistency like limb alignment in a total knee replacement. If your mechanical axis is off by a few degrees, the implant wears unevenly and fails early. Same with your Name, Address, Phone number across directories. Small inconsistencies create compounding problems and make the algorithms uncertain if this is the same business. Get the alignment right from the start or you're revising later.
NAP Consistency: Your Name, Address, and Phone number must be identical everywhere. Same abbreviations. Same punctuation. Your website, GBP, directories. Google notices when things don't match, and it tanks your trust score.
What else do I have to align?
Service Area: Define exactly which Melbourne suburbs you serve. Google uses this to match you to local searches.
Categories: Use "Orthopaedic Surgeon" as your primary. Then add secondary categories like "Hip Replacement Specialist" or "Sports Medicine Doctor" to catch more specific searches.
Photos: Upload professional shots of your clinic interior, exterior, and headshots of your team. People want to see where they're going and who they're trusting.
Posts: Use the posting feature for updates. New technology, patient education events, seasonal health tips. It signals to Google that you're active.
Go deep on local keywords
Ranking for "Orthopaedic Surgeon Melbourne" isn't enough. The patients who actually book are searching for specific things.
Specific Procedures: "Knee replacement surgeon Malvern," "ACL repair specialist Richmond." These people have a diagnosis and want a specialist in their area. High intent.
Sub-Specialty Focus: "Paediatric orthopaedics Hawthorn," "Hand and wrist trauma specialist St Kilda." GPs and patients looking for niche experts search this way.
Problem-Based Queries: "Best surgeon for chronic hip pain Melbourne," "Non-surgical treatment for rotator cuff tear Melbourne." These patients are researching before committing. Be the educational resource they find.
Note the distinction here: these are the phrases patients type, not claims you publish. You can write a genuinely useful page about chronic hip pain that answers what someone searching that phrase needs to know. What you cannot do is describe yourself as the "best" or "leading" surgeon on the page itself. Comparative and superlative claims you can't substantiate are a breach of the advertising rules. Answer the question; don't make the claim.
