When doctors compare medical website packages in Australia, they are often comparing two different products under the same label.
One is a project: pay a build fee, launch the site, then take responsibility for what follows. The other is a managed service: pay monthly for the site and the people who keep it running and current.
Neither model is automatically cheaper. The answer depends on the practice, the contract and who will do the work after launch.
How a one-off medical website build works
A one-off build usually begins with a deposit and ends with a final payment at launch. Hosting and maintenance may be separate. The practice may receive CMS access so staff can edit the site, or it may pay the provider for future changes.
Published examples from our Australian medical website price comparison include:
- CoreWebHub at $1,200, $2,499 or $4,999 across its three tiers;
- Medical Web Builders at $2,480 + GST or $5,500 + GST, then $92 + GST a month for hosting and maintenance;
- Quantum Digital at $2,530 setup, then $99 a month for its Technical subscription or $198 a month for Content+;
- Practice Boost's Practice Launch from $3,000+;
- EG Solutions from $1,500 + GST for a solo site and $3,500–$8,000 + GST for a full clinic.
Those prices are not directly interchangeable. Page counts, copywriting, integrations, support and GST differ.
A one-off build can suit you when
- the practice details are stable;
- a staff member has time and confidence to manage the CMS;
- you want to pay more at the start and minimise service fees later;
- the contract gives you the ownership and export rights you want;
- future design changes can be quoted as needed.
The costs to check after launch
Ask about hosting, plugin or platform licences, security, backups, domain renewal, technical fixes and edits. A project price can be excellent value and still have a separate operating cost.
Staff time belongs in the calculation too. Someone needs to draft each change, resize the image, publish it, check mobile layout and confirm the old information has disappeared from every relevant page.
How a managed medical website works
A managed website folds the build and ongoing work into a regular fee. BusyBeeDoc starts at $200 a month including GST for one or two practitioners and $400 a month including GST for three or more, with no setup fee.
The plan includes design, copy, hosting and unlimited text and design edits while subscribed. The practice sends a change and the website team handles it. That changes the buying decision from “What does the file cost?” to “Who is responsible for keeping this accurate?”
A managed website can suit you when
- the practice is new and details are still changing;
- doctors consult across several locations;
- clinicians join or leave regularly;
- nobody in the practice owns the website task;
- reception needs fast notices and booking updates;
- the doctor wants copy and layout changes handled together;
- predictable monthly cash flow matters more than owning a static project outright.
The trade-off is the continuing fee. The agreement should explain cancellation, ownership, transfer and what happens to the site when the service ends.
First-year cost is a better comparison than setup price
For a one- or two-practitioner practice, BusyBeeDoc's published first-year fee is $2,400 including GST.
Using other public prices reviewed on 2 August 2026:
- Medical Web Builders Standard is $2,480 + GST, plus 11 months at $92 + GST after its free first month: $3,492 + GST in year one.
- Quantum Digital Technical is $2,530 setup plus 12 months at $99: $3,718 in year one on the published figures.
- Quantum Digital Content+ is $2,530 plus 12 months at $198: $4,906 in year one on the published figures.
These totals still do not make the packages equivalent. Medical Web Builders lists three minor monthly revisions. Quantum's lower tier supplies editing tools for the practice; its Content+ tier supplies two hours of fast changes each month. BusyBeeDoc includes unlimited text and design edits while the plan is active.
For CoreWebHub, Practice Boost and EG Solutions, the reviewed pages do not give enough detail to calculate a comparable first-year support total. Ask for a written figure based on the same page count and edit needs.
Website ownership: ask six separate questions
“Do I own the website?” can produce a yes that means less than expected. Break it down.
- Who owns and controls the domain name?
- Who owns the copy and original photography?
- Can the site be exported to another host?
- Are premium themes, plugins or licences transferable?
- What happens to the website when the monthly service ends?
- Is there a transfer fee or notice period?
Get the answers in writing. A practice can reasonably choose convenience over portability, or portability over convenience. It should know which one it is buying.
The edit question changes the answer
Imagine the next 12 months include a new doctor, two periods of leave, a fee change, a second consulting room, a revised referral pathway, a new booking link and several wording corrections.
Under a DIY model, staff make and test those updates. Under capped support, the practice batches or pays for them. Under a managed unlimited-edit model, the practice requests them as they arise.
That workload is why medical practices need website edits more often than expected. The model that looks cheapest for a quiet brochure may feel very different during a year of growth.
A quick decision guide
Choose a one-off build when the practice is stable, has an internal website owner and wants more control over the asset after handover.
Choose a managed website when information changes regularly, staff time is scarce and the practice wants one team responsible for the words, design and technical upkeep.
Choose neither until the quote states the full first-year cost, ongoing edit allowance, ownership, cancellation and transfer terms.
The BusyBeeDoc managed website offer
BusyBeeDoc is doctor-founded and built for Australian private practice. There is no setup fee. Plans start at $200 a month including GST, with the website design, copy, hosting and unlimited text and design edits included while the plan is active.
This is most useful during the busy period when a practice is opening, adding clinicians, changing rooms or improving the information it gives patients and referrers.
